"CSR Award reflects PPG's commitment to social responsibility practices again. PPG will lead by example, continue to initiate more CSR projects and encourage more enterprises and employees to get involved." said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate & government affairs, Asia Pacific.
Adhering to the core value of "recognizing the needs and concerns of society", PPG Asia Pacific has always committed itself to "giving back to the community". In 2013, the company invested in 15 community projects, covering China, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and other regions. Five focus areas include education, human services, culture and arts, civic & community affairs and environmental protection. Except for donations to Ya'an Earthquake in China and Typhoon Haiyan in Philippine, most of the others are regular projects.
PPG has funded Scholarship Program in 11 universities in China for over a decade, more than 800 students have been awarded PPG Scholarship. Nowadays, Scholarship Program has been expanded to Korea and Malaysia. In the Yushu "warm winter" program which has been going on for 6 years, PPG employees donated clothing, bedding and school supplies to children in remote areas with poor conditions. In 2009, PPG helped rebuild 50 libraries in Zitong County, Sichuan Province after the Wenchuan Earthquake and established the CSR Zitong Base. In the past few years, PPG has contributed to the local youth education initiatives by organizing volunteer activities, writing competition and book donation.
Besides the regular projects, PPG Asia Pacific also continued to deliver new programs. For instance, PPG entered into cooperation with WWF to support its education projects. Meanwhile, employees and their families from PPG Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, and Korea also take an active part in events on animal welfare. In recent years, PPG has hosted "Eco-Classroom" Open Day in Tianjin and Zhangjiagang plants. Highly spoken of by local governments and communities, this project not only clears up misunderstandings about chemical company, but also enlightens the public on eco-friendly coatings products and technologies. In particular, it can shed some light on major selections for high school students to attend colleges. In the near future, the "Eco-Classroom" Open Day will also be launched in other PPG plants.
"The fulfillment of social responsibilities cannot be completed at one stroke. PPG has been initiating a number of long-term projects in Asia Pacific. At the same time, we will promote projects gaining positive feedback from the society and community." added Cathy Yan.
PPG has been highly recognized by the whole society for its great efforts in social responsibility practice during 2013:
At the sixth International Summit on Health Management and Health Insurances & International Health Management Forum held in Beijing on Dec 6, PPG was awarded the title of "2013 Pioneer Enterprise in Health Management" for its outstanding achievements in creating a Culture of Health and focusing on employee wellness.
PPG was awarded Busan Mecenat Award for Education by the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education for the second consecutive year to recognize its support in local education and fulfillment of social responsibilities. To support and encourage female talents in the chemical field, PPG set up Scholarship Programs in Pusan National University in Korea since 2011. This program was widely recognized by the Department of Education in Busan. Meanwhile, PPG also gave all-out support to another charity program initiated by the local government: scholarship winners will tutor the needy high school students free of charge. In 2014, PPG plans to increase the number of universities they work with in Korea and sponsor more community activities.
In early December, Sophia Zhang from PPG China headquarters won the "Golden Heart Award" which sponsored by Shanghai Office for Cultural and Ethical Progress, Shanghai Association of Volunteers and Federation of Volunteers from Foreign Enterprises. It is another good example that PPG China Volunteer Association has done a great job.
